Crayon and Dye Magic!
Today, we’re going to create bold, colourful artworks with a fun technique using crayons, chalk, and black dye. Kids will love this process as it’s simple, messy, and makes their creations pop with amazing contrast.
What You’ll Need:
Playground chalk
Cartridge paper
Soft brush or sponge
Steps to Create Your Masterpiece:
Draw Your Outline
Draw Your Outline: Use thick playground chalk to sketch your picture. Keep the lines clear and bold. A light hand with the chalk works best so the dye can fully soak in later.
Add Colour with the Wax Crayons: Colour inside the chalk outlines using crayons or oil pastels. Press hard so the paper is fully covered and no white bits peek through. Blend colours to add extra depth and vibrancy to your picture. Be careful not to colour over the chalk lines!
Prepare the Painting Dye: Mix black powder dye with water. Use extra powder to make the dye as dark as possible for striking results.
Apply the Painting Dye: Using a soft brush or sponge, gently wash the dye over your artwork. The chalk will absorb the dye, creating bold outlines around your crayon colours. Some dye might sit on the crayon areas—this adds character. If there’s too much, simply dab it off with a paper towel.
And there you have it!
A vibrant artwork that’s full of character and contrasts.
This technique works for any subject, from simple shapes to detailed images. It’s quick, easy, and guaranteed to bring smiles all around. Have fun experimenting and see what unique designs you can create!
