Let’s Get Started:

Set Up:  Lay out the materials and explain to the children that they’ll be using their fingers and thumbs to create animals. Each thumbprint or fingerprint will be a part of their artwork.

Paint and Stamp:  Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of paint to a thumb or finger. (One colour per finger works best!) Test the print on scrap paper to make sure there’s not too much paint—it should stamp, not smudge.

Create Your Animals:  Press the painted finger or thumb onto the paper to make shapes. Thumbs work great for larger animals like cows or horses, and smaller fingers are perfect for bees, chicks, or flowers!

Dry Time:  Let the prints dry for a few minutes.

Add Details: Once the paint is dry, use a fine-tip marker to draw on eyes, wings, legs, and other details to bring the animals to life.

Tips:

  • Keep the paint thin for neat, clear prints.

  • Encourage the kids to experiment with patterns and different animals—horses, pigs, butterflies, or even flowers!

  • These are perfect for personalised cards or classroom displays.

Wrap-Up:

This activity is simple, fun, and personal—no two animals will look the same because every child’s prints are unique! Encourage the kids to share their creations and talk about their animals. It’s a great way to build confidence in their artistic skills while having a blast.
