Creative Lesson Plan: Kandinsky Classroom Art Project

Kandinsky Classroom Art Project
Kandinsky Classroom Art Project

Kandinsky with Circles Art Project:

We’re diving into Wassily Kandinsky's colourful world and creating our own vibrant masterpiece inspired by his famous concentric circles. Kids will not only have fun painting but also learn about an amazing artist!

It is a great project to start the year, for the classroom to get to know each other and to display it in the classroom so that the class can see it every day.

What You’ll Need:

  1. FAS Student Acrylic (if using a canvas) or FAS Super Tempera paints (if using newsprint or cartridge paper)

  2. Plenty of paintbrushes

  3. A big ruler or measuring tape

  4. A large canvas or roll of cartridge paper (or tape sheets of paper together)

Steps:

Introduce Kandinsky:

Start by sharing a bit about Wassily Kandinsky, an artist known for his use of bright colours and abstract shapes. Show some examples of his work, especially his concentric circles, to inspire the students.

Prepare the Surface:

If using a canvas, get it ready with acrylic paints. If using paper, tape sheets together to make a large surface and use tempera paints.

Divide the Space:

Measure and divide the surface into squares so that every child has their own square (or two squares if you have more students).

Assign Squares:

Give each child their designated square(s).

Paint the Background:

Let the kids paint their squares in bright, solid colours. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

Add Circles:

Once dry, have the children paint a small oval or circle in the centre of their square using different colours. Encourage them to use various brushes for each colour and to avoid making perfect circles.

Create Concentric Circles:

Kids should continue painting rings around the initial circle with different colours until they reach the edge of their square. Encourage creativity and avoid repeating colour combinations.

Reflect on Kandinsky:

After completing their paintings, discuss how Kandinsky used shapes and colours to express emotions and ideas. Ask the children how their own art reflects Kandinsky’s style.

This project brings Kandinsky’s art into your classroom and lets children explore their creativity through painting. By the end, the large, colourful artwork will be a striking tribute to Kandinsky’s influence.
