Today, we’re going to create a beautiful skyline using a fun resist technique. Kids will love watching their designs come to life as the colours pop! This lesson is perfect for sparking imagination while learning basic painting skills.

What You’ll Need:
Watery paint (FAS Super Tempera or watered-down acrylic) or dye
Paintbrushes
Thick paper
Optional: Crayons for added texture
Steps:
Draw Your Skyline:
Have the children draw a skyline of their neighbourhood or invent one from their imagination. A simple silhouette is best for this project. Mark starting points on each edge so that the skyline can be joined with other students’ work to create one big continuous skyline.
Paint the Skyline:
Use black acrylic paint or waterproof ink to fill in the skyline. Let it dry completely, as this will resist the next layer of paint.
Create the Wash:
Mix your watery paint or dye. The paint should be thin enough to flow easily over the paper but still show strong colours.
Apply the Wash:
Brush the watery paint across the entire page, covering the sky area. Watch as the paint glides over the skyline, leaving the silhouette standing out.
Join the Skies:
Once dry, join each student’s skyline together for a striking class mural.
This resist technique creates a striking contrast, making the skyline stand out against the colourful sky. It’s a great way to teach children about silhouettes and contrast while giving them the freedom to use their imagination. Simple, fun, and full of creativity!
