Compass Painting – A Fun and Easy Art Lesson for Kids with School Paint

Compass Painting:

Today, we’re going to create bright, colourful designs using a simple tool—a compass! Kids will love this painting idea because it’s easy, fun, and creates fantastic patterns. Plus, it’s a great way to explore shapes and colour blending.

What You’ll Need:

  1. A pencil compass

  2. A thin paintbrush

  3. Bright tempera like FAS Super Tempera or school paints

  4. A palette or small cups for mixing paint

  5. Thick paper or card

  6. A cloth for wiping the brush

  7. A container of water

Steps to Create Compass Paintings:

  1. Set up the compass – Insert a thin paintbrush into the pencil holder of the compass where the pencil would normally go.

  2. Dip the brush in paint – Choose a bright colour and dip the tip of the brush into the paint. Not too much, just enough to glide smoothly.

  3. Draw circles – Place the compass point on the paper and carefully draw a circle using the paintbrush instead of a pencil.

  4. Layer the colours – Try using different colours inside each other to create a rainbow or abstract effect.

  5. Experiment with patterns – Overlap circles, mix colours, or add dots and lines to make the artwork unique.

  6. Let it dry – Once finished, leave the painting to dry completely before displaying.
